Watchman, What of the Night? Reading This Week's News Through Ezekiel 33

From the Black Sea to the Strait of Hormuz to the U.S. midterms, the same question runs through the headlines: who is sounding a faithful warning?

This week's stories form a pattern. Ships are sinking in the Black Sea, tankers are under threat near Hormuz, missiles reach Kyiv before the sirens sound, and two democracies head to the polls with their people divided. Behind every headline is the question of warning: who saw it coming, and who spoke up?

In Ezekiel 33 the LORD gives the prophet the role of watchman over the house of Israel. The watchman does not cause the sword, and he cannot stop it alone. His duty is to see clearly and blow the trumpet. A watchman who stays silent carries the guilt, and so do people who hear the trumpet and ignore it.

The nations are doing what the prophets said nations do: they rage, bargain and trade alliances (Psalm 2:1). The diesel deal shows how quickly need for fuel can change foreign policy. The voter-roll fight shows how easily trust is lost and how slowly it comes back. Israel's election shows a people seeking security in men, which the prophets warned against again and again (Isaiah 31:1).

The response is not fear. Habakkuk said, 'I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower.' Read the news soberly. Separate facts from spin. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem and for the cities where we live (Jeremiah 29:7). Hold leaders to the standard of Micah 6:8: do justly, love mercy, walk humbly. Yeshua gave his disciples the same charge the prophets gave Israel: 'Watch ye therefore, and pray always' (Luke 21:36).
